Claremont McKenna College

HEALTHY CMC –
COVID UPDATE

As we launch into our third academic year with COVID-19 prevalent throughout the world, we thank all of our community members for your attention to the College’s health and safety protocols. We appreciate your continued cooperation with our ongoing mitigation measures, which are designed to help keep all community members as healthy as possible.

Although we hope that the worst is behind us, we remain mindful that COVID-19 is stubbornly persistent. We therefore urge you to remain vigilant about your health and that of the community around you. Please continue to consult Public Health dashboards and other tools to stay informed about transmission rates and other metrics in your area:

  • Los Angeles County’s dashboard can be accessed here.
  • The CDC’s community levels tool (by County) can be accessed here.

This page will provide you with updated, CMC-specific information for the new academic year, and will be updated as necessary. As always, we welcome your feedback, suggestions and concerns, as keeping the community safe requires the dedication of all.

COVID-19 Case Management

CMC will continue to report updated information about positive COVID-19 cases identified on campus on a week-by-week basis; you will see updates here every Monday. The COVID Compliance Committee will send timely messages to the community as needed.

There were one (1) on-campus positive case for the week of 02/20/2023.

Testing

Students are required to test within 72 hours after arriving on campus, and that same requirement may be put in place for each of the major breaks. There is no re-entry testing requirement for faculty or staff, although we strongly encourage faculty and staff to help protect the health of our campus community by testing during the first two weeks of classes and following major breaks.

The College reserves the right to require this testing if conditions warrant it or if the County requires it. As always, diagnostic testing is required for those who are symptomatic.

In alignment with the consortium and in an effort to centralize our processes and resources, free testing of CMC students, faculty, and staff will now be provided through TCCS Student Health Services (SHS).

SHS partners with Shield T3 to offer PCR saliva tests, and these free tests will be administered at six free vending machines across the colleges, including at CMC (in the breezeway of the Emett Student Center near the Amazon lockers). Members of The Claremont Colleges community may test at any site they choose, and no appointments are required. Samples should be dropped off within two hours of collection and must be dropped in the receptacle by 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Visit www.shieldt3.com to learn more.

For more information about testing, including hours, locations, the steps to test, and an instructional video with Spanish translation, please visit SHS here.

In-person testing at Tranquada Student Services Center on 757 College Way has been discontinued, effective February 1, 2023. CMC’s test kit vending machine is located in the Hub breezeway near the Amazon lockers; any member of the CMC community may access a free test at any of the consortium’s vending machines outlined above.

Please note: a smart device is required to access the vending machines. If you do not have a smart phone, please contact the Hamilton Health Box (HHB) Clinic at covid19@cmc.edu or (909) 607-2301.

Student Testing

Students already have existing portal profiles with Student Health Services and can access saliva PCR tests at any testing site, including on-demand at any one of the COVID test vending machines.

Employee Testing

In order to begin accessing testing through SHS, employees must complete their authorization and consent forms in Workday. Doing so will create your profile in the SHS Employee Patient Portal, which is required for COVID-19 testing at all testing locations. Please note that employee profiles may not appear in the SHS Portal until 24 hours after completing authorization and consent.

Testing Resources

Hamilton Health Box Clinic, Claremont Boulevard and Sixth Street.

HHB remains on campus to continue to provide the excellent, personalized service to which CMC students, faculty, and staff have grown accustomed since the outset of the pandemic. In addition to supporting members of the CMC community who test positive, HHB will continue to be available to answer your questions, provide information about quarantine and isolation requirements, and perform testing for those who wish to try to end isolation early. Moreover, for our symptomatic community members who have also had a confirmed exposure to a positive case, HHB can perform a rapid Cue diagnostic test. All testing is by appointment only, with Clinic hours Monday-Friday 8 am–5 pm (last test at 3 pm); and Saturday 1–3 pm. Please contact the HHB Clinic at covid19@cmc.edu or (909) 607-2301.

Masking

Masking is currently not required, but strongly encouraged in indoor as well as crowded outdoor settings. Please note that masks can be required in classrooms and academic spaces if designated by the instructor in charge. While there is no immediate plan to require masking in other settings on campus, the College will comply with any health officer orders issued by Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

Human Resources will provide N95, KN95 or surgical/procedure masks to individual departments, to the Bauer Mail Room, to Story House, and upon request. Students should bring a supply of masks to campus, and can contact the Dean of Students if they need assistance obtaining masks.

Personal Hygiene

Just as in the past two academic years, the College offers hand sanitizing stations throughout campus and cleaning supplies in administrative and academic buildings. Please help keep high-touch surfaces clean by availing yourself of these cleaning supplies.

For Visitors

Visitors will no longer need to submit proof of vaccination, although the College highly encourages all visitors to be vaccinated and boosted.  Overnight visitors will be required to submit proof of a negative antigen test to their campus contact; this test should be done no more than 48 hours prior to arrival on campus.

Thank you, as always, for all you do to help ensure the safety of everyone in the CMC community. Together, we can look forward to another great year!
